BHP Law Celebrates Three Years of Success in Work Experience Programme for Aspiring Lawyers

14th May 2025

BHP Law is proud to mark the third consecutive year of its successful work experience programme, designed to create career opportunities for young people in the legal sector.

The initiative was originally inspired in 2023 by one of the firm’s apprentice solicitors, Ellie Phillips, who experienced firsthand the challenges of securing placements in the industry.

Now in her fifth year as one of BHP Law’s seven solicitor apprentices, Ellie proposed the idea to the Partners, who wholeheartedly backed her vision to establish a formal work experience scheme. Since its inception, the programme has flourished, providing invaluable opportunities for Year 12 and 13 students across the North East.

“It’s incredibly difficult to gain work experience in the legal sector, and I know from personal experience how frustrating that can be,” Ellie said. “It has been a real pleasure to develop this programme. The enthusiasm and commitment we have seen from the candidates over the years demonstrates just how important opportunities like these are. BHP Law has been supportive from the very top, trusting me to take the lead on the initiative.”

BHP Law, which has offices in Darlington, Stockton, Durham, Newcastle, and Tynemouth, continues to offer hands-on experience to candidates each year, allowing them to spend a week at the firm’s head office in Darlington. Participants gain exposure to various legal teams, including Residential Conveyancing, Wills, Trusts and Probate, Family Law, and Court of Protection (among others), alongside organised workshops tailored to provide participants with the skills and information they need to succeed.

As the programme continues to grow, BHP Law remains committed to nurturing young talent in the region. The scheme is actively promoted in North East-based sixth forms & colleges, and Ellie regularly visits schools to provide guidance to students interested in a career in law.
