BHP Law is proud to celebrate the third successful year of its legal work experience programme, dedicated to helping young people take their first steps toward a career in law.
The initiative was first inspired by senior solicitor apprentice Ellie Phillips, who understood firsthand how challenging it can be to secure placements in the legal sector while at college. Now in her fifth year as one of BHP Law’s seven solicitor apprentices, Ellie has become a driving force behind the programme, committed to ensuring that no student faces the same barriers she once did.
Since launch, the scheme has flourished, welcoming more students year on year as interest and demand steadily grow. This year, in response to a surge of exceptionally strong applications, BHP Law expanded its student intake to four participants, reflecting both the programme’s rising popularity and the remarkable calibre of aspiring solicitors across the region.
"Breaking into the legal profession without personal connections can be challenging, and it often leaves aspiring lawyers feeling frustrated and anxious," Ellie said. "Building and expanding this programme has been an incredibly rewarding experience - each year, the passion and talent we see reinforces why initiatives like this are so essential. I'm grateful to BHP Law for trusting me to lead this and for their continued commitment to investing in its future."
The scheme is designed for Year 12 and 13 students across the North East, offering them the chance to spend a week-long placement at BHP Law’s Darlington head office. During the week, participants gain hands-on experience in departments such as Residential Conveyancing, Wills, Trusts and Probate, Family Law, and the Court of Protection. Bespoke workshops also equip students with the practical knowledge and professional insights they need to succeed.
With offices in Darlington, Stockton, Durham, Newcastle, and Tynemouth, BHP Law remains deeply committed to nurturing local talent, actively promoting the initiative in sixth forms and colleges across the region. Ellie plays a vital role in this outreach, frequently visiting schools to inspire and support students who aspire to join the legal profession.
Lisa Cairns, Head of People Services added: “We’re incredibly proud of Ellie, not only for her drive and vision, but for the real impact she’s made. Watching this scheme grow from an idea into a thriving initiative has been inspiring. It’s a testament to what happens when passion meets opportunity, and it’s been a privilege to witness it go from strength to strength.”
