The origins of the firm date back to 1835, with the establishment of Steavensons Plant and Park in Darlington. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, Burt Hart & Pratt (formerly L J Heron & Co) was established in Durham.
In 1993, these practices merged to form Blackett Hart & Pratt, bringing together strong local heritage, complementary expertise and a shared commitment to high professional standards.
Over the following years, the firm continued to grow through carefully selected mergers, allowing it to broaden its services and geographic reach while retaining the personal service associated with a trusted regional firm.
In July 2006, the partnership converted to a limited liability partnership, becoming Blackett Hart & Pratt LLP. In 2008, the firm began trading as BHP Law, a name that reflects both its heritage and its modern outlook.
With four offices across the North East, BHP Law continues to combine the reassurance of an established regional firm with a practical, forward-looking approach to legal advice; rooted in tradition, but focused firmly on the needs of today’s clients.
Blackett Hart & Pratt expanded through mergers with a number of well-respected practices, including:
- Walton Hardy & Clough (Darlington) in 1998
- Deas Mallen Solicitors (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne) in 2001
- Winskell & Winskell (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne) in 2003
- Harvey & Marron (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne) in 2006
- Anderson & Haggie (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne) in 2006
- James & Baker (Teesside) in 2007
- Adamsons/J W Mitchell Dodds (North Shields) in 2007
- Clarksons (Halifax) in 2008
- CMH Solicitors (Durham) in 2010
These mergers strengthened the firm’s capabilities across both private client and commercial disciplines, reinforcing its reputation across the North East and beyond.
